Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework Recognition of Prior Informal Learning (RPL) Project

The project aims to facilitate a national debate on the recognition of prior informal learning (RPL) within the context of the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). The key outcome of this debate will be the development of guidelines to support the implementation of RPL provision across all post-16 education and training sectors in Scotland.
The guidelines will form a section of the SCQF Handbook and will cover all prior informal learning which has not been previously assessed or credit-rated. This will include prior learning achieved through life and work experiences as well as prior learning gained in less formal contexts in community-based learning, work-based learning, continuing professional development and voluntary work. Developing effective mechanisms for recognising prior learning is an essential element of the successful implementation of the SCQF.

The SCQF RPL project has developed national guidelines for the recognition of prior informal learning within the context of the SCQF. The guidelines are the outcome of a national debate on RPL and their purpose is to support the implementation of RPL provision across all post-16 education and training sectors in Scotland.

The guidelines will form a section of the SCQF Handbook and cover all prior learning which has not been previously assessed or credit-rated. This includes prior learning achieved through life and work experiences as well as prior learning gained in non-formal contexts in community-based learning, work-based learning, continuing professional development and voluntary work.
Developing effective mechanisms for the recognition of prior informal learning is regarded as being fundamental to the success of the SCQF as a tool for promoting and enabling lifelong learning.

Q
I want to do a Degree so the Framework's no use to me. It's only for job-related vocational courses?

The SCQF RPL resource pack has been developed to complement the SCQF RPL Guidelines and aims to support practitioners in the development and operation of RPL processes. This pack provides examples of practice (Part 1) and resources (Part 2) which have been provided by practitioners within organisations across the post-16 education and training sectors in Scotland.
